Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is retiring after more than two decades on the nation's 

HIGHEST COURT, NPR HAS LEARNED. BREYER WILL MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT ON THURSDAY AT 

THE WHITE HOUSE.HE AUTHORED MANY OF THE COURT'S LESS-GLAMOROUS LEGAL DECISIONS AND 

WORKED BEHIND THE SCENES TO BUILD CONSENSUS FOR CENTRIST DECISIONS ON A CONSERVATIVE COURT.

With Breyer's retirement, President Biden can finally name a new Supreme Court 

JUSTICE. DURING THE 2020 CAMPAIGN, HE PROMISED TO NAME A BLACK WOMAN. BOTH FEDERAL 

JUDGE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON AND CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT JUSTICE

 LEONDRA KRUGER HAVE BEEN MENTIONED AS POTENTIAL CANDIDATES FOR THE COURT.
