How did we connect with these Riddles?
This subject and these riddles have been addressed on numerous websites where Middle Earth enthusiasts argue whether Gollum was misled. So, how did they get to this blog?
If you look at it from a different perspective, it makes sense for you to be here. Check the answers Gollum provided to the riddles: mountains, wind, dark, fish, time. It doesn't take much study to realize that he has riddles regarding things around him. He dwells in the never-ending black tunnels of the mountain where the wind is hurling. He's eating fish. How old he is, since wearing the One Ring granted him longevity, is unclear.
Bilbo's riddles, on the other hand, concentrated on the subjects of an insidious life: teeth, sunshine over flowers, ovum, fish on a little single-legged table, the man at the table sitting on a three-legged stool, the cat getting bones. Hobbits love to eat and drink, as we all know, and have fun at the table. Breakfast is the essential meal of the day and is closely followed by others. Thus, teeth, eggs, and fish food (and cat sharing) are self-explanatory. The shire is usually portrayed as a location full of lovely environment and wild green wetlands – a perfect spot for daisies basking in the sun.
Another way around
So, both riddlers presented their riddles. However, as fate would have it, Gollum initially was a hobbits-like species (if not a hobbit itself), and he gave many of those replies, recalling the early years of his infancy. Similar factors aided Bilbo – the cultural legacy Gollum had, as a kid, heard of and could work with some of these (or similar) riddles.
Bilbo was supposed to have tossed Gollum's riddles at Gollum, while Gollum's riddles would be returned to him by Bilbo. This would have made both of them more enjoyable. However, we can see why they chose not; the goal here wasn't pleasured. Instead, it was a fight between intelligent life and death.
What conclusions are we left with, having remembered one of the great mental struggles of all times? Well, if you truly don't have to stake your life on riddles, we certainly advise. Riddles should be enjoyable, a chance to exercise the little grey cells. So please construct a riddle for yourself if you wish to test part of it. Otherwise, if you prefer to spend your spare time in another manner, reread the hobbit riddles.
